This weekend we will learn how our ancestors transformed animal hides into beautiful and durable clothing material.
This weekend we will learn how our ancestors transformed animal hides into beautiful and durable clothing material. With the spirit of hunting all around us, we will learn to utilize one of the most amazing gifts of the deer- their hide. Participants will have the opportunity to take a deer hide from start to finish, ending with beautiful buckskin, and learning all the steps to get there. We will learn about both Dry and Wet scraping methods of buckskin making, though wet scraping will be the focus of this workshop. Bark tan as well as fur on tanning will also be taught, though participants will not be able to dive into these projects fully, as braintan buckskin requires so much of our time and attention this weekend. The weekend will be surrounded by gratitude for the deer and all they share with us. Eating venison together, making bone tools, and learning about other uses of this magnificent animal.
If you are a beginner and want to explore the process of natural hide tanning, come join us. If you have tanned hides on your own, or joined us for a past hide workshop, come to push your skills to the next level. Have a finished hide or two that you are ready to make into a beautiful craft? Bring your hides and work under the guidance and inspiration of our experienced crafters. Want to focus on fur-on tanning? You can choose to focus on this process for the weekend and end up with a finished brain tanned fur-on hide. Whatever your level of skill or experience this workshop will help push you to the next level!
