Potluck Celebrations Fall 2016

Homeschoolers and Preschoolers Celebrate!
Carrying on with tradition, we had potlucks with our families and staff this Tuesday and Thursday. For Tuesday Homeschool at West Hill, the celebration included a huge fire and some cooking on the fire as well as dishes prepared by parents. The Jay Clan Kids led their parents through a coal carrying obstacle course. Fire was a huge theme for this group this fall. All aspects of fire - creating, tending, utilizing, honoring and carrying - united and gave identity to the Jay Clan. The parents also got to experience first-hand how well the kids mapped and navigated the YMCA Outdoor Adventure Center, by creating a final 3D map in real-time. Thank you Tuesday YNAP families of Fall 2016 for joining us!
On Thursday, the Preschool and Homeschoolers also had a potluck finale at 4-H acres. The weather was bitter cold and windy - a perfect symbol of the changing seasons from Fall to Winter. Preschool families new and old got to come together to exchange gifts and share the final highlights of the session. Preschool children took home either a bow + arrow ornament crafted from honeysuckle, rafia, feathers, and beeswax, or a dried and pressed leaf ornament adorned with acorns and protected with wax paper. So many fun adventures this Fall. Hearing stories about the Snack Badger, Pushy Porcupine, Our Ancestors, and Diversity will stick with us over the break!
The Homeschool Celebration was unique as ever. This season, the kids were so passionate about acting and theater, that we put on 3 plays for the parents after the meal. Acting out stories and forest life was a daily ritual, so this was a good look at our session. We also challenged parents to get in the newly improved scout pit and ice castle out in the woods. The theme of the "Forest Before Us" will live in our memories for years to come. The forest flag, which was sewn in one of our guilds, got passed around the circle as a final salute to a great year at 4-H acres.
An immense thank you to all families for your support, delicious food, and spirited children!
