Week Ten of Summer Camp 2017!

Megan Pugh, September 4, 2017

This week marked our final camp week for the 2017 season! With a definite chill in the air Ravens, Archers, Gatherers, Travelers, Base Campers and our Growing Wild Clans alike all sunk in to a week of adventure!

Raven's Camp spent the week learning about the mysterious Raven every morning through epic stories that were acted out by Raven, Turtle, Hawk, Bear and Wolf- counselors who embodied different animals.

Campers learned from Turtle (Nina) how the earth was created and what role Raven had in it. Afterwards they enjoyed a morning of choices which included playing with clay, an epic game of Renegades, building fairy villages and storytelling. Later they did each other's face paint, learned how to make cordage and practiced their circus skills.

Circus acts ranged from juggling and Poi to acrobatics and clowning

The Fairy Village!

On the final day of Raven's Camp Alex told a story about a personal experience she had with group of ravens in the Sierra Nevada mountains. After the story the campers had an awesome dance party that led into the most epic and intense game of Raven Spirit EVER! At the beginning counselors enjoyed playing the role of the evil "forest trolls," tagging campers and causing them to remain frozen. However after the first campers found and were marked by the Raven, the counselors were no longer safe; if tagged by a camper they would turn into a "wandering soul." When the game ended (campers won!) Raven's Camp gathered in a circle and discussed highlights from the game. Campers talked about how they used their camouflage skills to hide from the trolls and how they found Raven hidden on the edge of the Hemlock Forest. Afterwards campers broke off into their clans were they enjoyed delicious banana and chocolate chip treats over their fires.

The Archers were a stealthy bunch and hard to find at times. They spent their week making survival bows and arrow and playing games that culminated in an epic Archer's Olympics!

The Hunter Gatherer's were engaging in all kind of games and challenges. I caught them here doing a blind taste test! When the blindfolds came off there were cries for more chocolate and GARLIC!

Down the path to Trillium Camp...found our youngest campers finding apples or engaged in happy free play at the swing, on the hill or seeing what they can find under a log!

Meanwhile on West Hill the Base Campers were busy exploring the far corners of the YMCA Outdoor Adventureland! Stick challenges on the agenda the day I visited.

In the last moments of camp, co-founder Jed Jordan showed up with a very large tub of ice cream to share during the final farewells....as another amazing summer came to an end.

Thanks for spending your summer with us. We ca't wait to see you next summer. In the meantime, please join us for school break days, Winter Camp and Spring camp!
