I had the opportunity to attend the Primitive Pursuits Friday After-School Program at 4-H Acres. The kids spent the afternoon scouring for animal tracks, exploring the property, playing together, and finished the day with sledding. Despite the deep snow and freezing temperatures, I witnessed how capable kids are at adapting to all weather conditions when they wear the correct layers and tune into their body’s needs. Not only are these kids comfortable and capable of learning to adapt to cold weather, but they are also having fun while doing it!

Winter is the perfect time to start learning tracking skills because animal signs really pop in the snow. Through winter tracking, we slow down and look closely at the ground for signs of life and learn to respect the land we share with animals. The kids had a blast discovering vole holes and learning how voles tunnel under the snow. We also found rabbit and squirrel tracks and talked about the difference between the two. To make it even more fun and memorable, we used songs to help everyone remember the gaits of different animals.

We ended the program by taking turns sledding. I loved seeing the kids practice communication and problem-solving as they waited for their turn. They’re not only learning to respect and care for themselves in the cold, but also showing respect and kindness toward one another.
Thanks,
Katie
