Wild One

by | Various

Origin: Benjamin Pixie said: “I learned it from Miriam Grace, who wrote the second verse and altered it a bit as she learned it…but some human named Sage (who I believe comes from California) woke up from dreaming in a tent and had to shake the person beside them awake and sing the song to them first thing other wise it would have run back to the dream world.” Benjamin taught the song to Carey French, who brought it to the Wilderness Awareness School at Community Night in the Fall of 2014.

Melissa Blake brought it to Primitive Pursuits from a song-sharing gathering in 2016, including
the third verse. Additional verses available in the recording.

Let the sun shine down and warm my bones

Let the birds and the bees come and take my clothes (kids version: “kiss my nose”)

Cuz I’m a wild one now made of wind and rain

I’m wild and I ain’t going back again

Let the moon shine down and cleanse my soul

Let the wolves and the owls come and tend my coals

Cuz I’m a wild one now made of stars and dreams

I’m wild and I’m part of everything

I’m wild and I’m part of everything

I’m wild and I’m part of everything

Let the stars shine down and fill my heart

Let the beaver and the bear teach me of their art

I’m a wild one now full of fat and fish
The tending of the wild is my greatest wish

The spreading of the wild is my greatest wish

The loving of the wild is my greatest wish

(etc, ad lib)
