Week 6 at primitive pursuits!
We are officially over halfway through the summer here at Primitive Pursuits! We’ve been having a super fun time this summer. Our campers have been enjoying the sunshine here in Ithaca and we can’t wait for who we get to see next week!
Starting off strong on Monday our kiddos had positive attitudes and were ready to start off on a good note. Our Growing Wild campers got to explore Trillium Camp, picking up logs and finding all sorts of interesting things like insects, rocks, and even snails! After getting to explore camp, our campers were super excited to start getting their hands dirty, our kids got to play in the mud–everything from just laughing and playing to building small shelters for insects and fairies. Ending the day, our campers explored the creek and get some time to cool off.
After an adventurous Monday at camp our kids were super excited to come back to camp on Tuesday. Both of our Primitive Cafe groups got to do a butter churning contest, one group shook a jar and the other group used an actual churner. These campers have also really been perfecting their fire skills and everyone in the group made a successful fire.
On Wednesday, both Primitive Cafe groups made some really yummy meals. One group hung out at Hearth Camp, and made spring rolls and chili crisps. The other group hung out at the log circle and made pine tea in the morning, and bread and jam in the afternoon. The campers made the bread by wrapping blobs of the dough in leaves, and roasting them over the fire. Paired with the jam, the campers said it was delicious! Our Growing Wild campers had an eventful morning starting off with escaping through a spiderweb at Trillium Camp. The campers had to work together to figure out how to move through the yarn to get to the other side. After escaping the web, the kids got to have a fire and make popcorn to enjoy. On the other end of the Acres our Forest Explorers – Purple Finches played a game called Coyote and Deer where they had to throw a bandana at their peers trying to tag each other. The day was filled with laughter, curiosity, and of course lots of fun!
Thursday morning there were lots of bugs around the Acres… that could only mean one thing–time for fire building! Our campers got to help the counselors make fires, learning the importance of not just the skills to build a fire but also the safety that goes into making it. By the afternoon, our campers were in all different spots around camp. Our Wildcrafters were working on creating different things with clay. They made everything from mugs to bowls to small trinkets. We then heard thunder and we all had to head to the Pole Barn, but the fun didn’t stop there, our campers did more with clay and even got to carve sticks and practice their knife safety. When it was clear to be outside again they were hot and wanted to cool off. Pathfinders, Forest Villagers, and Wildcrafters ended the day playing in the sprinkler.
After a super busy and fun week we can’t believe its already Friday! Our Primitive Cafe campers worked hard today making all kinds of yummy foods for campers to enjoy, including fried chicken, apple fritters, and even lemonade. They ended their day with a feast, and added even more treats like cucumber sandwiches, pie, and more. Wildcrafters were at Coyote Camp making a big fire, and they got to display all of the creative things they made with clay from yesterday. It was a super eventful week!
