With the recent rain we found some awesome tracks in the mud at Arnot Forest! These look to be the tracks of an American Black Bear, Ursus americanus. We know there has been a black bear living in the Arnot Forest for a number of years, and we’re excited to find this proof!

Black bear are omnivores, with nearly 85% of their diet consisting of plant vegetation.

Black bears can be found all along the East Coast from Georgia to Maine and into Canada, they prefer heavily wooded areas, and are generally shy around humans.

Black bears are one of only 2 modern bear species that are not considered to be under threat or extinction by the IUCN.
